Gravenhurst High School students take part in Strong Mind Strong Kids’ peer mentoring pilot project

On November 22, a group of Grade 9 to 12 students from Gravenhurst High School (GHS) visited the Trillium Lakelands District School Board Muskoka Education Centre to participate in a peer mentorship training session.

The session was in partnership with Strong Minds Strong Kids, and is part of a pilot project where the organization is expanding their current traditionally teacher-led lesson into smaller lessons that can be facilitated by high school student leaders.

Throughout the day-long initiative, students explored what it means to be a leader, and learned about healthy strategies for coping with stress. The goal is to eventually have these peer leaders meet with future GHS students from their feeder schools to share their learnings to support the transition to high school.

“The overall goal of the program is to empower our current GHS students and to help them recognize their strengths and influence as leaders in the school,” said GHS Guidance Department teacher, Carol Kent. “It is also an opportunity to equip incoming Grade 9 students with some skills that will help ease the stressful transition to high school.”
